How to buy from Chiikawa Market from overseas

Good news: Chiikawa Market — the official Chiikawa goods store — has an English storefront and ships to most countries directly, so for a lot of items you don't need a proxy at all. The way it ships changed in December 2025, though, and most English guides still describe the old system. Here is how it actually works now.
Is chiikawamarket.jp legitimate?
Yes. It is the official store, and it is easy to verify rather than take on faith.
Chiikawa Market is operated by Gray Parka Service Co., Ltd., the company that handles Nagano's official merchandise, registered at New River Tower 7F, 1-6-11 Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, Tokyo. Japanese law requires online retailers to publish that company information, and the store does, on its Specified Commercial Transactions Law page — company name, address and contact details in full. A store that hides that page is the one to worry about.
- What you should see: prices in yen (or your currency via the region selector), a company-information page naming Gray Parka Service, and Japanese payment options alongside international ones.
- What is normal but surprising: for overseas orders the seller of record is Global-e, not Gray Parka Service. That is the store's own arrangement, not a scam — more on it below.
- What should stop you: a different domain, prices far below the Japanese retail price, or pressure to pay by bank transfer or gift card.
Switch the store to English

- Go to chiikawamarket.jp and use the language switch to change the site to English.
- If the page keeps flipping back to Japanese, add
?currency=USDto the end of the URL. We hit this constantly when testing product links: without a locale cookie the English pages redirect to Japanese, and the currency parameter is what makes the English view stick. Every product link we publish already carries it. - Set your country in the region selector before you shop. It controls the currency, the payment methods you are offered and whether an item can be sold to you at all.
If your country is not in the selector, the store does not ship there — that is the definitive test, not the shipping page.
How international shipping works now
On 15 December 2025 the store switched its overseas system. It retired WorldShopping, the forwarding-agent service it used before, and moved to Global-e. Ignore any guide that still tells you to use WorldShopping here.
Under the new arrangement:
- Global-e becomes the seller for your order, and the parcel is carried by DHL under Global-e's contract.
- Duties and taxes are calculated at checkout, in your own currency, so the total you agree to is the total you pay. This is the single biggest practical improvement — no surprise customs invoice on the doorstep.
- Shipping is quoted at checkout and varies by destination. It is not a flat rate, and the store bills the amount quoted when you order, not the amount at the time the parcel actually ships.
Handling time is the part people underestimate. In-stock items ship within 7 business days counted from the day after you order, and pre-orders ship within 7 business days of the scheduled release date — Japanese public holidays not included. Add DHL transit on top of that.
What it costs
Direct orders are the cheap route, because you pay one shipping charge and no service fee. There is nothing to compare against a proxy's percentage — you are simply buying from a shop that posts abroad.
Two numbers are worth knowing anyway, because they decide whether a forwarding service is ever worth it for this store:
- Domestic shipping inside Japan is ¥990 to ¥4,070 depending on the region, and free over ¥11,000 including tax. That is what you pay if you ship to a Japanese forwarding address instead of your own.
- International shipping is quoted at checkout. For a sense of scale, Japan Post's EMS rate for a 1 kg parcel is ¥4,400 to Europe, Canada or Australia and ¥5,300 to the United States; DHL through Global-e is priced separately but lands in the same territory.
So the forwarding route only makes sense when you are consolidating several Japanese orders into one parcel, or when the store will not sell to your country. For a single Chiikawa Market order, direct is both cheaper and simpler.

When you still need a proxy
A minority of items are tagged as Japan-only and cannot be sold to an overseas address. If your address is rejected at checkout for one specific item while other items go through, that is the reason. The workarounds, for those items only:
- Buy-for-me proxy (e.g. Japan Rabbit, Buyee): paste the product link, they buy it and forward it to you — no Japanese account or card needed.
- Forwarding address (e.g. tenso.com, Blackship): you order yourself using their Japanese address, then they ship it on.
Two other cases need a proxy no matter what the store says: cafe and pop-up exclusives, which are sold in person in Japan, and crane-game prizes, which are never retailed at all. For prizes, an online crane service or the Mercari aftermarket is the route.
One caution the store makes explicitly: if you use an overseas forwarding service, Chiikawa Market accepts no responsibility for damage, breakage or missing items in transit. Direct ordering keeps you inside their protection; forwarding puts the risk on you.
Pre-orders, limits and cancellations
The rules here are stricter than most Western stores, and they catch people out.
- Cancellations are not accepted as a rule. Treat every order as final once placed.
- You cannot mix a pre-order and an in-stock item in the same order. They must be placed separately, which also means paying shipping twice.
- Purchase limits per order are common on popular items. Check the limit before you build a large cart, especially if you are ordering for friends.
- Cards must normally be in the orderer's own name. Ordering on someone else's card can get the order cancelled.
- Defects and wrong items must be reported within 7 days of arrival; the store covers return shipping in those cases. Change-of-mind returns are not offered.
A few practical tips

- Some Japanese stores decline non-Japanese credit cards. Chiikawa Market's international checkout is built for foreign cards, but if a payment fails, a buy-for-me proxy sidesteps the problem entirely.
- Consolidate. One 2 kg parcel is far cheaper than four 500 g parcels, and with pre-orders shipping separately it is easy to end up with more parcels than you meant to buy.

How long does delivery take?
